Abstract:
|
In the statistical world we all know the excellent advice that Tufte, Cleveland and others have given us on how to draw good graphics and we all know that many graphics by statisticians don't seem to pay any attention to that advice. In recent years graphics are also being drawn by non-statisticians, and while we may sometimes be rightly critical of their awareness of statistical principles, their graphics are often very attractive and eye-catching. What can we as statisticians learn from these different approaches and how can we improve graphical practice in general, incorporating both design and statistical principles?
