Abstract:
|
Over the past eight years, the field of sports statistics has evolved significantly. There is an official AMSTAT journal for the field, courses in the subject are being taught at more schools, and professional teams and the sports media are all utilizing more advanced measures. In addition to the increased interest, there is significantly more and easily accessible data. All of these elements together signal the opportunity for sports statistics to grow even more as a serious academic field. In order for the field to capture the opportunity to grow, the structures, teaching, and research in sport statistics all need to continue to evolve. Structures, such as research centers, are needed to broaden the academic activity within the field. Expanded and more focused teaching is also needed as the breadth and depth of the literature grows. Research needs to move away from rankings and into deeper questions about specific sports. The possibilities for growth of the field are tremendous.
