Abstract:
|
Climate science is a ripe field of application for UQ. In the past, the climate community has developed various approaches for quantifying uncertainty of model predictions, but the connection to mainstream UQ appears not to have been fully articulated. This talk will review the outcomes of the SAMSI Workshop on UQ for Climate which focused on the latest developments in uncertainty quantification in this domain. The Workshop brought together experts from both climate science and UQ, including both scientists and statisticians. The Workshop also put some special emphasis on the role that massive observational data sets, particularly those from satellites, can play since these are relatively new data sources that have not been previously exploited for this purpose. The talk will review the main technical aspects of the Workshop on UQ and Climate, and the accomplishments of the SAMSI program in this area.
