Abstract:

Estimation of group-level variance parameters in multilevel models can be a challenge, especially when the number of groups is small. We discuss some regularizations to improve classical maximum likelihood and REML estimates, some priors for Bayesian inferences, and some simulation tools which allow the user of classical estimates to better adjust for bias and account for inferential uncertainty.
