Abstract:

We consider the problem of predicting patient outcomes of a progressive clinical condition based only on the within-patient upward or downward movement of expression for a given set of genes. We demonstrate the application of this approach to the problem of predicting multiple organ failure and related complications in a set of critically injured blunt force trauma victims. We show that an extremely simple, technology independent predictor may be derived that contributes to a better understanding of this clinical condition and has potential for rapid translation into clinical practice.
