Abstract:

Forensic DNA evidence has become the gold standard for identification in criminal cases. Nevertheless, in a number of areas there remain controversial issues; notably cold hits (identifying someone by searching a database), familial searches (identifying someone when only a relative of theirs is present in the database), and mixtures (the presence of several sources of DNA).

These apparently specialized topics in fact pose an interesting mix of statistical, legal, and interpretive issues and problems. This talk will discuss each in turn, using actual case studies, and consider how well current theory and practice match up.
