Abstract:
|
Data analysis contests are growing dramatically in number and popularity. The Netflix prize brought the opportunity for contests to drive commercial and scientific progress to the attention of millions of people outside the statistical community. This presentation will outline recent successful contests involving the analysis of large-scale data from astronomy, from medical records, from supermarkets, and elsewhere. The speaker will then discuss lessons learned about designing successful contests, and how current limitations can be overcome. In particular, how can algorithm speed be measured objectively in a contest?
