Abstract:

Can we expect the high school graduate of 2020 to be a better "statistical thinker" than those who are graduating today? Possibly if the new Common Core State Standards for mathematics are successfully implemented. But what needs to happen to make this a reality? Will teachers be prepared and ready to teach to the challenging conceptual content of the statistics and probability standards in the Common Core? What will materials will be available to teachers to support instruction in statistics and probability? Is "statistical literacy for all" achievable or just a pipe dream? This paper will explore these questions.
