Abstract:

A functional nonlinear model with a scalar response, functional explanatory variable, and monotone parameter curve, is introduced. Under certain assumptions, the functional nonlinear model can be written as a nonlinear mixed effects model. This allows the monotone parameter curve to be estimated within the mixed model framework, using restricted maximum likelihood for smoothing parameter selection.
