Abstract:

What happened to the 5 million barrels of crude oil that flowed into the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill? We will examine the spread of the oil and its effects on the Gulf using a high interaction graphics system (Spotfire) tightly coupled to a statistics engine (R). The system allows us to link different views of the data including spatial maps. The ability to fit and display simple models with the system and to drill down to specific geographic areas and subsets of the date add to our understanding of the effects of the oil.
