Abstract:

An in-depth analysis of Dorian Shainin's variable search (VS) method is carried out. Properties of the VS design in terms of run length and estimation capability are investigated. Statistical tests of hypotheses associated with different stages of the VS method are studied. Factors affecting performance of the VS approach in terms of probability of correct screening and run size are identified. Sensitivity of the VS method with respect to correctness of engineering assumptions and noise variation is examined.
