Abstract:

Fitness logs are widely used as a tool to record exercise activity and to maintain steady progress in personal fitness; however, they are often a simple spreadsheet with no easy way of obtaining feedback. Using R, we have developed a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows to interactively record workouts and provides some immediate feedback. The user may view the data directly in a tabular form, or may explore it visually in adjustable time plots. One of the GUIs objective is to encourage a consistent exercise regimen by assigning points to workouts that are roughly proportional to caloric expenditure functions and allow the user to earn virtual rewards based on those points. The GUI is hosted on a web server and accessible by internet through a standard web browser, thus eliminating the user barrier of R installation and competency.
