Abstract:

Few studies have examined the relationship between employee satisfaction and treatment outcomes such as mortality, hospital-acquired infections, and readmission. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA), a component of the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), has periodically in the past and annually since 2006 utilized its standardized All Employee Survey (AES) to measure the organizational health of facilities within the VA network. With a novel use of six years worth of the VHA AES data, we determine the level of satisfaction of employees at the facility level in areas including leadership, safety, customer focus, civility, psychological safety and overall satisfaction, among others, and model the odds of mortality, hospital-acquired infection and readmission as a function of facility characteristics to aid administrators and policymakers in improving outcomes.
