Abstract:

Pittsburg State University is a regional comprehensive university in Kansas. Current practice of statistics education for mathematics majors is to require a general education course in Elementary Statistics and the calculus based Probability and Statistics course. Math majors are bored in Elementary Statistics class and challenged in Probability and statistics class. They do not have a pleasant experience with statistics courses and they are not at all prepared to teach an AP Statistics course. Most instructors teaching Elementary Statistics courses are non-statisticians except the one statistician in the department who teaches just one section per semester. Analytical abilities of Elementary Statistics students vary tremendously and the average ability is way below that of mathematics majors.
