Abstract:

Penalties in ice hockey are an important part of the game since the cost of being called for a penalty is a heavy one. In this paper, we analyze all of the penalties called during the National Hockey League's 2009-10 regular season. As part of our analysis we look at the rate at which penalties were called by each of the leagues referees and linesman. One aspect of our analysis is to consider the impact of experience on penalties called by a given official. Additionally, we analyze tendencies among the types of penalties for each of these officials. The results of our analysis might be useful to NHL teams to guide their style of play knowing that certain officials will be one the ice for a given game.
