Abstract:

Anthropologists want to know if chimpanzees have an adolescent growth spurt similar to humans. Captivity may change an animal's biology so it may be preferable to model the weights of wild chimpanzees. Using longitudinal weight data for chimpanzees from Gombe National Park we fit mixed effect model with B-splines of age. Separate models are fit for males and females and include seasonal, yearly and individual effects and number of days pregnant. The fit for B-splines of Age gives us the growth curve for the average chimpanzee. We also examine the first and second derivatives with respect to age to determine if there is an adolescent growth spurt.
