Abstract:

In business surveys many of the variables are highly concentrated within the population, so that classical sampling methods are inappropriate. One possible solution is cut-off sampling, which discards a part of the population from the sampling frame. Although cut-off sampling is common among practitioners, only recently its theoretical foundations have been strengthened. In this article we use the general approach proposed by Benedetti et al. (2010) to design longitudinal business surveys. In particular we derive the sample size of the design for the estimation (i) of a ratio and (ii) of a total with nonresponse. Both in the methodology and in the numerical applications we employ a multipurpose and univariate cut-off design.
