Abstract:

Each year the National Hockey League (NHL), a North American professional ice hockey league, assigns new players to their 30 teams via a draft. Currently there are 7 rounds and each team has one selection among eligible players in each round. In this talk using nonparametric LOESS regression we create a way to assign value to the picks in that draft based upon past player performance at each selection. Creating an NHL equivalent to the Draft Value Chart that is used by the National Football League, we evaluate the drafting performance of NHL teams and players for drafts from 1991-2001. Our response metric is number of games played since that allows for the comparison of players across positions that they play on the ice. Additionally, this valuation of player talent allows for a common currency for trading of players or for trading draft picks. This performance is based upon how well each selected player did relative to the average player selected at that position in the draft.
