Abstract:

Watfactory is a rich and realistic simulation of a manufacturing process that challenges users to reduce output variation with the limitation of a tight budget. In this session, we provide some background on Watfactory and its use in teaching process improvement methods and concepts like those in Statistical Engineering and Six Sigma. We also present the results of a contest run early in 2011 by the Quality and Productivity section of the American Statistical Association. The contest, open to student teams worldwide, challenged the teams to learn enough about Watfactory to reduce variation in the final output. The winning team will present a summary of its process improvement journey.
