Abstract:

The use of paradata, or data collection process information, to enhance survey adminstration, survey estimation, and the monitoring of survey data quality has become almost ubiquitous with recent advances in data collection technology. Unfortunately, little is known about the error properties of the paradata themselves, and the implications of these error properties for survey operations and the quality of survey estimates. The objectives of this roundtable discussion will be to 1) discuss current uses of survey paradata, 2) brainstorm methods for quantifying the error in paradata collected using a variety of modes, 3) discuss study designs for analyzing the implications of the measurement error for survey operations and estimation, and 4) identify meaningful research agendas in this area.
