Abstract:

Linking observed patterns to underlying processes lies at the heart of studies in ecology. Identifying, summarizing, and understanding the mechanisms driving behavior in response to the environment provides challenges in both mathematical and statistical modeling. We present general concepts relating to both mathematical and statistical approaches to the underlying problem, highlight differences in goals, tools, and assumptions, then propose a framework for linking the two approaches. We illustrate the issues using data regarding flowering times of trees, and the spread of raccoon rabies across heterogeneous landscapes in the northeastern United States.
