Abstract:

This talk will discuss the historical beginnings of statistical consulting and discuss trends in science, which point to a shift in the paradigm from the statistical consultant to the statistical collaborator. Just as the rapid increase in computing power in the 20th century resulted in an explosion of new statistical methods, recent advances in technology in other scientific fields have led to more data being collected by more researchers. Statistical consulting at Virginia Tech will be used as an example of the shift from statistical consulting toward statistical collaboration. This trajectory started in 1948 with the founding of the Statistical Laboratory, transitioned to the Statistical Consulting Center in 1973, and reached its current focus toward collaboration with LISA (the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Statistical Analysis) in 2008.
