Abstract:

Last year the statistical graphics team from Iowa State University submitted a poster to the data exposition organized by Hadley Wickham for the ASA Section of Graphical Statistics exploring data provided by the Research Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) and Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) consisting of details for commercial flights throughout the United States. Supplemental data was also used in exploration including monthly fuel cost and consumption by carrier, fleet information by carrier, and weather details. Areas of exploration include fuel efficiency by carrier across time and distance flown, ghost flights by carrier, and the effect of crosswinds on arrival delays. Exploration relied on the use of google maps, and the ggplot2 package in R. In our talk we will highlight some of the findings and discuss tools for a graphical exploration of a very big data set.
