Abstract:

A nonparametric approach is proposed for inference regarding the Mann-Whitney effect (e.g. the probability that a subject randomized to the experimental treatment has a higher response than a subject randomized to the control treatment) with adjustment for covariates. New covariate-adjusted confidence intervals are constructed using empirical likelihood and related methods. Their operating characteristics, including the coverage probability and the average confidence interval length, are compared through simulation with those from alternative methods.
