Abstract:

When analyzing trends for different groups we often find they have different change points, making comparison of trends problematic over a common time interval of interest. We introduce our newly proposed measure, the average annual percent change (AAPC), to summarize and compare trends that are not constant over a given time period.

We apply the AAPC estimator to cancer incidence data to illustrate the new method and its utilities in trend comparisons, and its advantages over conventional methods. When the trend is constant over the entire time interval of interest, the AAPC reduces to the conventional estimators. AAPC has been used in the "Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer" and annual "Cancer Statistics Review".
