Abstract:

Nowadays the name of L. von Bortkiewicz (or Bortkewitsch) is known for his data set describing the numbers of men killed by horse kicks in the Prussian Army. As is well known, the number is distributed as a Poisson distribution with mean and variance of .61. The purpose of this paper is to describe and compare the distributions of numbers of current (during 12 months) sexual partners among U.S. women and Men. After considering the univariate distributions, bivariate relationships between the number and other relevant explanatory variables (demographic and social characteristics) will be examined. Finally, the number of sexual partners among U.S. women and men is expressed as a function of explanatory variables respectively. The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) will be analyzed.
