Abstract:

Over one million children live with substance dependent mothers in single-parent households. The provision of child care is associated with positive treatment outcomes. Few studies have examined the availability of child care in outpatient substance abuse treatment programs or identified factors associated with the availability of child care. With a novel use of 2008 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services data, we determine the availability of child care and model the odds that outpatient facilities provide child care as a function of facility characteristics to aid policymakers and service administrators develop services tailored to women. Seven percent of facilities provide child care. Facilities that offer a sliding-fee scale or free treatment, provide domestic violence services, or are operated by government or nonprofit agencies are more likely to offer child care.
