Abstract:

A randomization test is presented for testing whether two populations have equal distribution functions. The randomization test is based on a measure of the difference between two empirical distribution functions. The type I error and power properties for the randomization test is compared to those for two other randomization tests and two nonparametric tests. A systematic comparison of the randomization test and the four competitors is conducted using a parameterization scheme that describes the difference in the populations in terms of a primary 'distance' parameter and a secondary 'orientation' parameter. The randomization test has favorable power properties for large sample sizes and also for small samples when the difference in the populations is due primarily to the difference in the population means.
