Abstract:

Methods for combining effect-size estimates from multiple studies have important applications in a variety of disciplines, and random effects meta-analysis models have become increasing popular in recent years. A fundamental analysis with random effects models is a confidence interval for the variance of the effect sizes. Several confidence interval methods for the effect-size variance have been proposed; their small-sample properties and robustness to assumption violations are examined. Our findings indicate that these confidence interval methods are extremely sensitive to minor violations of the normality assumption and should be used with caution. Furthermore, even when all assumptions have been satisfied, the confidence intervals widths are unacceptably wide unless the number of studies is large.
