Abstract:

Due to the outstanding employment and graduate study opportunities in statistics there has been student-driven demand for BS Statistics programs and for mathematics departments to increase the number of statistics courses. As these programs gain in popularity, it is important to articulate what the student with an undergraduate degree in statistics will have learned. This talk will review the ASA Curriculum Guidelines for Undergraduate Programs in Statistical Science and present the BYU BS Statistics Program Learning Outcomes. The top undergraduate statistics programs will be reviewed to compare how different institutions with different resources available to undergraduate programs deliver the curriculum. The assessment of student learning according to the program learning outcomes and the student satisfaction at BYU will be presented that motivated recent program changes.
