Abstract:

Clinical trials often involve rating scale or nominal data. The commonly employed model with proportional odds assumption is reviewed for its inability to get rid of nuisance parameter. Solution is provided to remedy the situation. Alternative approach which does not require the assumption is reviewed. The comparison of k >= 2 treatments in an 1-way layout has been developed earlier. For a 2-way layout, Hwang and Lee (2008) proposed a model-free approach coupled with a transformation to Wilcoxon's rank sum to: (1) Test interaction, which is an extension of Zelen's test to ordered categorical data, (2) Test treatment effect assuming no interaction, which is an extension of Birch-Cox-Gart's test of common odds ratio from binary data to rating scaled data. The present paper will explain the results in a more heuristic way and illustrate the details using numerical examples.
