Abstract:

Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) is usually estimated from Diffusion-Weighted Imaging (DWI) data acquired through magnetic resonance experiment. Raw data of DWI, however, carries noise, which affects the accuracy of tensor estimation and thus introduces systematic bias to their derived eigenvalues, on which scientific inferences are usually based. This article proposes a Spatial Shrinkage Estimation (SSE) of DTI based on DWI data. The SSE proposes a two-step procedure to incorporate bias shrinkage of eigenvalues in a local smoothing framework. Thereby, on each 3d voxel grid, neighborhood information is borrowed to provide spatially smoothed tensor estimation and bias reduced estimation of their eigenvalues simultaneously. The efficacy of the proposed method comparing with the standard separate voxel-based method is illustrated via simulation evaluation and real data application.
