Keywords: average run length ; compound normal distribution
Abstract:

When the production rate is low, more than one machine may be used to manufacture the same product. It commonly occurs when the output from all machine streams are mixed. Each individual machine stream follows a normal distribution, but each may have a slightly different mean and/or standard deviation. The study investigates the average run lengths of the control charts under a compound normal distribution. The average run lengths may be determined from solutions to some differential equations.
