Abstract:

Motivated by questions on olfactory coding in honey bees, regression spline estimation is considered for cases where residuals exhibit long-range dependence or antipersistence. Quadratic and linear splines with partially free knots turn out to provide reliable answers when characterizing and comparing the response functions of glomeruli in the antennal lobe under various experimental situations. Asymptotic theory for least squares estimates of the knots and slope parameters is developed assuming Gaussian subordination in the domain of attraction of a Hermite process. The results are illustrated by examples in the biological context. This is joint work with Giovanni Galizia, Martin Strauch and Julia Rein (Department of Biology, University of Konstanz).
