Abstract:

In this paper, we propose a generalization of the log-series distribution based on a generalized negative binomial distribution of Gupta and Ong (Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, 2004), and study its properties. This distribution is used to obtain the distribution of the minimum of a random number of exponential variables. Such models have interesting applications in engineering and biological sciences in the contexts of "work-hardening" and "immunity", respectively. The parameters of the resulting distribution are estimated and the results compared with those of Tahmasbi and Rezaei (Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, 2008). Some examples are presented to illustrate the model.
