Abstract:

Recently, the empirical economic literature has focused on the role of managerial practices and R&D activities in fostering firms' performance. In this paper, we analyze this relationship for Italy, accounting not only for firm's specific characteristics, but also for her decisions on R&D strategies and her organizational capabilities, in terms of human capital emphasizing the role of firm's internationalization mode. We use an original panel at a micro level (firm level) from the Italian National Statistical Institute including information from firms' balance sheets, R&D investments, patenting and innovative activity and internationalization strategies for the period 1998-2004. We look for a non-linear impact of managerial strategies and R&D activities on firms' performance to explain large differences in Italian firms' role in international markets.
