Abstract:

Examination of daily temperature data shows that it contains many sinusoidal components with periods between 2 to 45 days. A multitaper variant of Hotelling's $T^2$ test shows many coincident periodic components in 200 years of daily temperature data from Stockholm and Padua, where they account for about 20\% of the variance in this frequency band. Other pairs of locations with long series of good data give similar results. Some of these periodicities have been observed in the interplanetary solar wind, so are definitively of solar origin, and it is probable that others are as well. Thus the assumption that spatial correlation between temperature data recorded at different locations decreases with increasing distance between the measurement sites is not true for these components indicating that averaging procedures should be re--examined.
