Abstract:

Translational research means different things to different investigators. Whether the bench to bedside to community continuum represents a single, uninterrupted sequence of events or a more discrete set of tasks remains a point of controversy. Whichever model one adopts, statisticians consulting with translational scientists must now be familiar with the entire sequence of events associated with their studies. For some studies the issues may be only statistical or design related while for others the issues are more practical in nature (e.g., funding, recruitment, access to the community)-all of which influence the statistical techniques used to advance science. The purpose of this presentation will be to orient statisticians to the new field of translational research and highlight features of the T1-T2 and beyond continuum likely to influence the statistical consulting process.
