Abstract:

Research has shown that, while it is important to include relevant and interesting contexts in the statistics curriculum, certain contexts may effect students' ability to judge sampling methods or research results (e.g. Watson & Moritz 2000; Kaplan 2009). The goal of the current research is to explore how students' personal experiences with and beliefs about the contextual matter of a problem impact their ability to determine if a sample can be generalized to a larger population. More specifically, it investigates if students are able to put aside their personal experiences with and beliefs about the contextual matter of a problem to assess the appropriateness of a sample and whether the strength of their beliefs influences their ability to do so. This presentation will include a review of the relevant literature and results from survey questions piloted in summer 2010.
