Abstract:

The Interceptor Multi-Threat Body Armor System has been worn by U.S. Army soldiers have been produced since 1998. Used by soldiers and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003, the body armor is designed to provide enhanced personnel protection from munitions and the fragmentary effects of IEDs. While widely considered to be an improvement over the previous body armor system, various issues have arisen over the years during acceptance testing, sometimes resulting in the recall of certain manufacturing lots. This talk will describe work by the Committee to Review the Testing of Body Armor Materials for Use by the U.S. Army, under the auspices of the National Research Council, to assess the validity of the testing methods used, including measurement, test materials, protocols and standards, and statistical methods.
