Abstract:

In both small colleges and large universities, students with strong mathematics preparation often slip through the cracks of the statistics curriculum. Enrolling in a standard introductory statistics class may leave them feeling unchallenged while starting directly with a two-term sequence in probability and mathematical statistics impairs their view of the role of statistics in solving real-world problems. So what is the "right" first course in statistics for such students? In this round table discussion, we will share experiences, talk about what's worked, what hasn't and why. Participants are invited to bring resources including textbook recommendations, syllabi, and ideas for curriculum sequences to reach the needs of this important constituency.
