Abstract:

The von Mises distribution is a standard distribution on the circle. It is often used when modeling an angular variable such as direction. The concentration (or dispersion) parameter of a von Mises distribution corresponds to the variance of a distribution on the real line. We develop a test for equality of dispersion for several von Mises populations, given small samples from each. We consider statistics related to the Bayes Factor and to quadratic discriminants. Several new test statistics are found for this problem. We use simulation to find the empirical distribution of these statistics. At least two of the new tests outperform the quadratic score function of Watamori and Jupp. However, the new tests are sensitive to the choice of prior distribution.
