Abstract:

An applied course in linear models tends to use higher level programming languages to analyze a set of data. Often there is very little programming involved in the analysis.

A theoretical course in linear models tends to follow a pattern: theorem.proof.theorem.proof.lemma. Students learn the "why" behind linear models; However, often there is no use of real data examples to illustrate the application of the theorem in modern practice.

If theory courses lack real data examples and applied courses lack theoretical underpinnings, where do students learn the connection between theory and application? Comps?

This round table aims at discussing ways of making the connections. Also under discussion is a related text, recently published, "A SAS/IML Companion for Linear Models."
