Abstract:

Translational research transforms scientific knowledge and discovery gained from laboratory into applications in clinical and community settings. This concept is often summarized by the phrase "bench-to-bedside" research. Compare to others, bench scientists are slow in understanding what statistics is and its importance. Trained and function in a very different platform, it is a challenge for statisticians to consult with bench scientists on various research questions. The essence of the translation findings beyond laboratory requires one to apply solid statistical thinking not only to data analysis but also in experimental planning. This talk will discuss the need to expand statistical collaboration with bench scientists. Stages of consulting process, common statistical requests and mistakes will be described. The role of education in statistical consulting will be highlighted.
