Abstract:

Pharmacoepidemiology is the study of the use of and the effects of drugs in large numbers of people. Increasingly, pharmacoepidemiology is conducted using large automated healthcare databases. Healthcare data are diverse and complex by nature, requiring attention to detail and the use of specific analytic tools, which creates unique challenges to both new and experienced analysts. I will discuss the differences between SAS programming for pharmacoepidemiology studies versus clinical trials, highlight challenges and important factors to consider when working with healthcare data. I will also share some programming tips for pharmacoepidemiology studies.
