Abstract:

Suppose we want to investigate the effectiveness of certain interventions on the rate of on-going events in a battlefield. The problem is formulated and studied as follows. A spatio-temporal point process is generating events over a given region and a time period. These events happen with some intensity ?(s,t) that varies over space and time. Suppose now that there is a fixed number of "interventions" at chosen locations and time points. The goal is to determine if the interventions had any effect on the rates at which the events occur. This talk develops a method to quantify the effects of interventions and assesses their significance. We examine the use of several statistics for measuring the spatial and temporal effects of interventions. Confidence intervals are then used to determine statistical significance.
