Abstract:

This paper applies 2000-2009 major league baseball data to investigate the impact of a team's statistics on its number of wins. A multiple linear regression model on wins is applied to determine which team statistics, or individual variables, best predict team wins during the regular season. Findings may be able to help determine how a Major League team may want to build their franchise by using this model to assist in the draft, trades, and the signing of free agents. In the current economy most teams in MLB are becoming more frugal in payment of salary for their players, and such a statistical analysis may assist them in evaluating players based more on these influential statistics rather than other factors that contribute less to winning.
