Title: Beyond a National Study: Moving the NHANES Experience to New Applications
Author(s): Lester Randolph Curtin*+
Companies: CDC
Address: 3311 Toledo Road, Hyattsville, MD, 20782,
Keywords: Subnational estimates ; Data Collection Methods ; Examination Data
Abstract:

As a national survey, the NHANES provides a significant and unique set of data that is used to set national health policies. But public health begins at the local level, and the NHANES is limited in what it can provide for sub-national areas. There has been a growing demand for NHANES-type data at the subnational level. This presentation illustrates how some local areas have interacted with CDC to develop local area surveys modeled after NHANES. Areas of interest include protocol development, data collection methods, sample design issues, budget considerations, and general operational aspects for person based examination surveys. Examples include CDC interactions with New York City, California, Wisconsin, and the Oregon Health Insurance study. In addition, the transfer of knowledge to the international arena is illustrated with the Canadian Health Measures Survey.
