Abstract:

Sustainability is the ability to endure. For a military enterprise, it is the ability of the enterprise, its services and products, and its systems to remain productive long term while minimizing waste and creating value. There are five abilities inherent in system sustainability: (1) availability of the product/service; (2) its dependability; (3) its capability to perform; (4) its affordability; and (5) the marketability of its concepts. This paper focuses on the first ability. The availability is a measure of the degree to which the product/service is in an operable state at the start of a mission, when the mission is called for at a random point in time. Operational Availability (Ao) is the probability that the product will be ready to perform its specified function. The paper introduces Ao, defines its mathematics, and provides a model/guide to an Ao analysis.
