Abstract:

It is well known that the mixtures of increasing failure rate (IFR) variables are not necessarily IFR. In this presentation, we shall investigate the monotonicity of the failure rate of the mixture of two standard skew normal variables. Even though the failure rate of a skew normal variable is increasing, it is shown that the shape of the failure rate of the mixture of two skew normal variables depend on the skew parameter as well as the mixing proportion.
